turning my back on vegetarianism.

I haven't had so much as a bite of red meat, or pig products in approximately 18 years -over half of my life. Twenty pages into this book, and I found myself rethinking all the reasons I have chosen to live a {mostly} meatless life.

Nourishing Traditions: The Cookbook that Challenges Politically Correct Nutrition and the Diet Dictocrats

Sally Fallon presents a strong argument for the importance of meat consumption. Strong enough that, when I get home, I fully plan on taking myself to the health food store and spending an obnoxious amount of money on organic, free-range, grass fed meat. Beef and chicken -to be specific. Then I plan on making broths, and stews, and soups, and soaking up all the amazing and important nutrients that my body is probably wanting.

I'll also be purchasing butter. And cream. And a juicer.

Along with an entire thesis-like introduction explaining the particulars of the food we eat as modern Americans, and why those foods are so damaging to our bodies, she provides hundreds of pages of recipes that are healthy, back to the basics, back to the way our ancestors ate. I am so excited to begin bringing my family back to a state of good healthy, wholesome, clean eating.

P.S. Mom, if you're reading this, I'm ordering you a copy too. We'll call it an early Christmas present.

"Overall, the data suggest that the health of Western vegetarians is good and similar to that of comparable non-vegetarians."

I love it when a (really good) book can completely change the way we look at things. I'll have to look into it myself!

Wow, I can't believe you are going to try meat again.. I assume you will just eat the broth? You may find you will do fine. I love the entry about snuggling with the pirate. And I hope you are feeling better, I don't know of anything worse than being cold and having a headache. Don't know which is worse.

When I stopped being vegetarian, it was when I was pregnant with Austin. I decided if I was going to eat meat, it was going to be the best. Luckily for us there is a ranch that sells organic grass feed beef just outside of Durango. Nate said it was the best thing that ever happened to meals in this house. I still don't eat meat everyday, but I never think I'll go back to being a vegetartian again.
